Who are you?
Who do you want to be?
How do you want others to see you?
What do you want in life?
These are questions that I ask myself on a regular basis, the answers of which lead me to new actions to take.
Without a clear sense of where we’re heading, we’re bound to end up where the winds of fortune take us…meaning, somewhere not of our own choosing. Being a victim to our outer circumstances.
Now, I don’t know about you, but that’s not the life I want. I lived that for 30 years. As they say: been there, did that, bought that T-shirt.
Instead, I choose to be an active participant of my fate. I want to be the one at the helm of my ship. I will Be the Hero of my own Life!
Most people will say something like “ok, how do you DO that?” Welp, there’s no short answer to that. There is no THING to DO.
It’s a state of BE-ING. A being-ness. An embodiment. An awareness. A Way in which we move about and navigate this life.
Does this sound familiar: In order for me to HAVE my dream house, I need to DO lots of hard work and then I’ll BE happy. Or maybe it’s: When I finally HAVE enough time and money, I’ll finally be able to DO those trips and then I’ll BE happy.
Yeah, me too.
When you zoom out, this approach serves us mostly in a good way. It’s what has lead us to wanting, wanting, wanting, more, more more. It’s what brought us to where we are today. And it’s the foundation of human civilization in a sense.
This way of being creates within us a sense of lack…the “grass is always greener” mindset…a hole to be filled…
Cloud Cult, one of my utmost favorite musical groups has a song from their album Love, 1x1x1, with the lyric “If you keep trying to fill your holes with the next best thing, well then the next best thing will give you more and more holes.”
And it’s absolutely true!
This continuous wanting for more and more is incessant and never-ending, making it dang near impossible to actually BE happy with what you HAVE.
Which brings me the crust of the biscuit: Be. Do. Have.
By BEING happy, whatever I DO will serve that happiness and I’ll HAVE happiness in my life.
Take the earlier example: In order for me to HAVE my dream house, I need to DO lots of hard work and then I’ll BE happy, and reverse engineer it to: by BEING Happy, the work that I DO will make me happier and I’ll do it better so it won’t occur as such hard work and I’ll HAVE the ability to buy the house of my dreams cause I’ll have more money and time!
This part is critical to understand. Your perspective is what shapes your entire reality. If you haven’t read my post about that, you can get it here. It’s the age-old adage: chop wood, carry water. Even if you had everything you wanted in your life…life would still go on, and you would still need to DO life. BE the DOING and your life will never be lacking, and you will HAVE it all.
It’s about wanting what you have. Getting what you want, and still wanting it.
In order to be happy, you must choose to be happy. In order to have abundance, you must choose to be abundant. In order to have peace, you must choose to be peaceful. As we choose the ways to be, we will be confronted with challenges that give us practice in being those things.
Choose to be patient, and you will get cut off on your way in to work. Choose to be happy, and your favorite sports team will lose. It’s not that the situations are new, it’s that our awareness has expanded and we are responding in a different way than before. This is where we get the payoff of BE-ing.
So what’s something you want to have? What do you need to do to get that something? And how will that something make you feel/be? Take that feeling, that way of being, and EMBODY that. BECOME that feeling and watch how what you do will create that having-ness. That’s the law of attraction. You don’t attract what you want…you attract what you are, and what you are is shaped by who/how you choose to be.
And it’s all up to you and the choices you make.
