Sorry to be the one to tell you this…but you’ll never be done with your work.
I don’t mean the 9 to 5 grind…you can be finished with that at any moment. And I don’t mean the work of creating the life of your dreams either. Even that can be attained and finished…for those who are really willing to do the work.
No, what I mean is the work that no one else can possibly do for you. The work that other people can’t even see, and you can’t either.
I’m talking about the work of the heart-body-brain connection.
The work of weeding the internal landscape and buffing the hidden chrome. Finding, mining and smelting the raw gold into useable treasures.
That’s the work I’m talking about. That’s the work that will never be done.
And y’know? I’m okay with that. I take pleasure in the process of digging deep into my being and seeing what I can find. Tuning in to the aspects of life that trigger me and then peeling back the layers that hide the cause of that triggering.
One of the biggest things I’ve learned through the process of creating an online business is changing my mindset from a problem based mindset to a solution based mindset.
Instead of seeing something and saying “what is there for me to fix?” it goes to “what is there for me to learn?”
By rephrasing this simple question from a problem based mindset to a solution based mindset, we open ourselves to an entirely new possibility of approaching something. Instead of approaching with caution and angst, we can approach with curiosity and excitement; a much more empowering context.
And when we allow ourselves that space – new, bold and brilliant solutions will present themselves. I often find that the best solutions to my queries come when my mind is the most relaxed.
So how does one do this work? Rumi sums it up beautifully in his poem The Sunrise Ruby:
In the early morning hour,
just before dawn, lover and beloved wake
and take a drink of water.
She asks, “Do you love me or yourself more?
Really, tell the absolute truth.”
He says, “There is nothing left of me.
I’m like a ruby held up to the sunrise.
Is it still a stone, or a world
made of redness? It has no resistance
This is how Hallaj said, I am God,
and told the truth!
The ruby and the sunrise are one.
Be courageous and discipline yourself.
Completely become hearing and ear,
and wear this sun-ruby as an earring.
Work. Keep digging your well.
Don’t think about getting off from work.
Water is there somewhere.
Submit to a daily practice.
Your loyalty to that
is a ring on the door.
Keep knocking, and the joy inside
will eventually open a window
and look out to see who’s there.
Work. Keep digging your well. Submit to a daily practice. Your loyalty to that is a ring on the door. Be courageous and discipline yourself. Have no resistance to the world around you and become your work.
Whoo-ey…that’s chill inspiring, yeah?
As the old Zen adage goes, Chop wood and Carry Water. Become the Doing. Only in this way will the work be done, because when we bring ourselves fully to the moment, we take pleasure in the doing-ness and it becomes our way of being in that moment. Work no longer occurs as a burden when we are fully present. Wood is chopped, water is carried. Life is happening.
What will you bring this new awareness to? Is there a project at work you’ve been putting off? How is your communication with your partner/spouse? Can you sense when they trigger you? What will you choose newly?
If you’re looking to dive deeper into this kind of work, I strongly recommend finding a coach, counselor or program. Here are two resources I’d love to share with you that I have personally used for my development and growth. The first is Landmark Worldwide. They are a training and development organization that causes profound transformation with thousands of people across the globe. And the second is Satori Prime, which is run by these two brothers, Guy and Ilan. It is a web based coaching program with different programs and options.
May the being-ness of life transmute and transform your work into playful ease and alignment! Be well, and have an amazing day!
